| What
is a silicon nitride Hot Surface Igniter?
A stronger igniter that has been designed to take the place of any
type of silicon carbide igniter.
What
is the difference between this igniter and the one in my appliance?
It uses the latest ceramic technology.
The
igniters look smaller, do they work as well?
In this case smaller is definitely better. They will not only light
the gas but are also very energy efficient requiring less than half
the energy to power them.
Can
these igniters be used for any other appliance other than those listed?
No, these igniters are designed for use with the appliances listed,
and should not be used in any other application. However, further
products will be added, to the range during 2005
It
would be great to keep a range of spares in my van but with the many
types of igniters available, and their fragility, I have been unable
to keep these on board. Can the kit reduce my inventory?
The kit has been designed with the service engineer in mind. The universal
Glo-stix kit replaces over 100 types of the most common silicon
carbide igniter and is energy efficient and very durable.
Some
of the older furnaces put out a lot of heat in the area that the wire
nuts will be. Do you know if the plastic will degrade too quickly?
At the end of the original hot surface igniter is a plug (which gets
cut off when replacing the igniter). This plug is made from the same
plastic as the wire nuts.
The replacement igniter in the kit has 15 inches of high temperature
cable attached to it (which is a higher spec than most original cables),
enabling the engineer to join the cables using the wire nuts as close
to the circuit board as possible which is well out of the heat and
close by many other plastic parts.
If the cable is cut short and you are concerned about the heat affecting
the wire nuts, you can always use porcelain ones. These are available
at most suppliers.
Will the plastic wire nuts rot away as they are subject to moisture?
They will not be affected by moisture at all.
Can
we replace SIC Round Igniter with your igniter?
Igniters Direct replace these with only one or two exceptions. The
ones that we do replace are listed on this site.
If
the igniter touches metal inside the furnace, will it short out?
Some furnaces have metal in close proximity to the igniter and when
the furnace heats up the burners can swell and touch the igniter.
This shorts out the Silicon Carbide igniters.
Yes the igniter could tend to spark if touched against a metal casing
but, unless the touch is prolonged (say 10 seconds) it shouldn't
spoil the igniter. If a Silicon Carbide igniter touches the metal
casing it shorts out and breaks instantly.
Prolonged intermittent touching of our igniter will cause failure
at some stage and if this is in conjunction with touching the burner
which is lit, it will display pock marks around the area where it
has touched normally around the tip.
Our flat gas dryer igniters
are totally insulated and will not short out at
all; so these could be a perfect answer to these difficult applications.
In all installations it is recommended that the igniter is at lease
half to three quarters of an inch away from the burner, unlike spark
ignition the distance from the burner is not too critical and as
long as it is in the path of the gas it will light it instantly.
Why
doesn't your igniter need a controller?
The Glo-stix igniter cannot be compared in any way to igniters
that require a controller. While they share the silicon nitride
strength, they are totally different in the way they are manufactured
and designed. Glo-stix igniters have been manufactured so
that a special voltage stabilizing controller is not required.
Igniters Direct recommend on the service appliance label provided
that the igniter is changed every 2 years to maintain energy efficiency.
Glo-stix are four times more energy efficient at full power
than certain silicon carbide igniters. If the igniter was not changed
after 2 years the Glo-stix would still be more energy efficient.
The igniter has environmental benefits and saves on energy costs.
I
have fitted an igniter and it's defective. How do I get a replacement?
In the unlikely event of a failure, simply return the igniter to
your wholesaler together with proof of purchase for a replacement.
Any problems email Igniters Direct.
Can
these Igniters sense flame? I have a customer who says that some of
the Nordyne numbers that you have on the replacement list are also
used for flame sensors?
Although our igniters are very good flame sensors it will always depend
on the type of controller the appliance uses. We do not recommend
that you use our igniters as flame sensors unless our instructions
state that they can be used for this use. If you are using our ingiters
successfully as a flame sensor, we would be very pleased to hear the
details.
